Why you shouldn’t skimp on sleep for healthy skin

d'you

While we’re busy perfecting our skincare routines and getting facials from the best aestheticians in town, the secret to healthy, radiant skin has been right under our nose all along! Get your beauty sleep. Don’t believe us? Let us explain why sleep is so so important for the health of our skin.

Skin Repair

All day, your skin protects you from pollution, germs, light and more. When we’re sleeping, it switches into recovery mode, a time of intense repair and regeneration. In fact, at this time, the repair and renewal process can be up to three times faster than during the day. Simply put, sleep is extremely vital for the maintenance of the integrity and structure of the skin. If you cut back on sleep you are reducing the amount of time the skin has to recover.

Hormonal Regulation

The production of melatonin and human growth hormone (HGH), which are responsible for the acceleration of skin regeneration and the production of antioxidants, is boosted at night. On the other hand, cortisol, the hormone produced in response to stress, is lowered with a good night’s sleep. Higher levels of cortisol means decreased wound healing, skin discoloration, reduced elasticity, and development of fine lines. Basically, a good sleep increases the good hormones and keeps the bad ones at bay.

Oxidative Stress

Sleep reduces the generation of free radicals and increases antioxidant action to protect against free radicals. This is super important because oxidative damage is one of the biggest causes of skin aging. You see, any imbalance of the free radicals in the skin leads to the destruction of collagen and skin cells. Not what you want if you are looking for healthy, glowing skin.

That's it from us for now!
